MARSDEN UNITED CHURCH

Mainly traditional worship using audio-visual equipment is at the centre of our village church – in a partnership between the Methodist and United Reformed Churches. We enjoy strong ecumenical links with the Parish Church. ‘We are a mixed congregation of all ages ranging from young families to our more mature members. We also have an active Junior Church during term-time’. We are at the heart of Marsden’s local festivals.

Saturday 8th October will see the Church host the Soul Choir. From 2pm the Soul Choir will be hosting a free taster session for anyone to have a go, followed by a Soul Choir concert from 3pm. Expect a great atmosphere all afternoon, with free entry and refreshments available.

Downholme Jazz feature throughout the day on Sunday 9th October, firstly with the longest running event at the festival, the traditional jazz church service from 10.30am. Come and celebrate! Following the jazz service is Downholme Jazz in concert from 12.30pm.

SUNDay 9th October
10:30

Traditional jazz church service with Downholme Jazz

Enjoy a warm welcome and an opportunity to take part in singing some hymns and spirituals with this newly re-formed band. Better still if you can clap on the off-beat! Too many musicians have passed during Covid including our main reed player Gerry Owen so we will have Gerry and other late members of New Orleans Wiggle on our minds especially as the band is supported by Gerry’s daughter and family. Come and celebrate!

‘Our dad was an ever present figure on the north west traditional jazz scene. A ‘reed man’ but no stranger to the mic, he enjoyed playing for audiences across the North and here in West Yorkshire. He is missed with much love by our family and friends from the music scene. We remember him through the music.’
Katherine Owen on behalf of the family.
